Four guys from my company and I fished out of MC Sat. with Capt. Gregg on his 31′ Tiara, Profishient Charter. Gotta plug this guy, we had a first class experience. Left the dock at 6 and headed up east in 30′ or so. Slowly started to boat a few and then we turned a little north into the 40′ plus, and had a triple. It was crazy for the next few hours. Ended up with 1 steelie, 2 browns, 4 kings from 11 to 13, and 21 cohos. Mostly orange thins and spoons, hot bait was a 4″ orange dodger with a small green fly on a copper long line. Thing got hammered and had hardly any tinsle on it after being pliered out, but kept getting hit. Deep rigger with a green spoon took the kings.
We live 2 hours from Lake Erie(3 hours from MC) and usually take an annual walleye trip, and after 1 good trip out of 3, we decided to try something different. I had been to MC years ago with Capt Ron Yagelski for coho and had a blast. Three of our crew had never fished for salmon and by 9, Capt Gregg had them really into it, setting birds and netting fish, a great team work experience. They are hooked and want to go to St. Joe next year for a try at some kings. His boat is roomy, and awesome clean, not knowing any MC charters, I chose his service off the net because he has a Tiara and i always wanted to fish on one.. He never stopped working the rods and was teaching my guys all the tricks. The lodging he got us was cool too, $79, new, and 25′ from his boat. We always get filet mignons and heat up some smoked ribs and fry pans of potatos and onions for our night before supper. This place had a covered deck right beside the channel, the train turntable provided some entertainment, too. We will book with him next year later after he moves his boat to St. Joe. Now, to try his cold smoked lox recipe………….

Heading for the barn…

Action is fast and furious right now (May 09) out of Holland Michigan. The salmon have migrated north from the bottom end of the lake in about one weeks time following the baitfish and the “right” water.

Exceptionally heavy coolers are the norm right now, with a mixture of BIG Kings up to 20lbs, as well as coho, lake trout and steelhead. School sized kings are showing up as well, hitting higher offerings. 2009 is shaping up to be one of the best salmon fishing seasons ever!

Spring time salmon fishing on southern Lake Michigan from the ports of Michigan City Indiana and St Joseph Michigan is about as good as it gets. The south end of Lake Michigan warms up first and the baitfish, salmon, and trout swarm into the shallows to feed.

Most of our Indiana charters and Michigan Charters focus on fishing in 50 foot or less of water. The first few weeks of April will find Profishient cruising between sandbars just south of St Joseph looking for the first coho of the year, along with local brown trout. By the middle of April, the king salmon (chinook) begin to invade the shallows following the preferred baitfish Alewife. During this time, we are fishing mostly surface lines with small crankbaits and spoons including Dreamweaver Super Slims, Michigan Stingers and Silver Streak mini’s. Gold, Copper, Orange, Pink and Yellow are dominant colors this time of year. Around the middle of the month of April out of St Joseph begins the orange dodger/fly setups for Coho, still on the surface. King salmon can be found mixed in the top layer of water hitting nearly any offering suitable for cohos.

After the bottom end of the lake begins to warm up significantly around the middle of May, the majority of the coho and king salmon begin to migrate north towards the ports of Saugatuck and Holland. Profishient Charters follows the salmon on their migration routes, chasing them from nearshore waters to well past 10 miles offshore, depending on the migration patterns.

Consistent spring king fishing continues in Holland Michigan through the middle of June until Lake Michigan begins its summer transition. During this 3 week period, the lake stratifies and sets up in early July with the summer thermocline. This transition period can be tricky fishing, with scattered pockets of fish, as well as skamania steelhead heading towards river mouths of the Kalamazoo River and Lake Macatawa.

Once July hits, the kings move back nearshore and we run our fishing charters mostly within 3-10 miles from the Michigan shoreline. Excellent catches of kings up to 20 pounds are the norm, as well as good catches of Lake trout.

Weapons of war…

Our early April through May fishing charters in St. Joseph Michigan provide excellent opportunities at multi species catches including Coho salmon, Brown Trout, Steelhead Trout and King Salmon. The majority of our tackle is fairly light in the 12-20lb test range, orientated towards surface offerings run behind planer boards. Our choice of spring time planers are the big jon wille style boards. Lures including Silver Streaks, Dreamweavers, Michigan Stingers, Brads Thinfish and Rapalas rule the spread. We typically pulls these spring salmon baits between 25 and 100 feet behind planer boards depending on the conditions and depth of water.

Small dodger fly setups including the Baby Spin Doctors from Dreamweaver Lures with Action Fly’s Coho flies are superb when the coho bite is on! We often catch many kings as well that hit these top water offerings.

Shallow set Big Jon Downriggers and short lengths of leadcore and copper with the same lures keep the fish honest later in the morning when they slip down from the top surface water.

Trolling speeds depend on the program of the day…usually a little quicker with a spoon and thinfish program, and slightly slower with a dodger fly program.

Best color Action Flies are blue/green, green, silver/green and black behind all orange or red dodgers or Baby Spin Doctors.
