Asian Carp threat to Great Lakes
Much has been made recently of the threat to the Great Lakes by invasion of the Asian Carp through the Chicago waterway connecting the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan. Asian Carp are voracious eaters who interestingly do not eat other fish, but rather filter all of the smaller organisms out of the water. In short, they eat the entire bottom of the food chain.
What that means for all great lakes sportfish, including salmon is that once the bottom falls out, there are no baitfish, and if there are not baitfish, there are no sportfish.
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox filed a lawsuit in the US Supreme Court against the state of Illinois along with all the other Great Lakes states including the Province of Ontario. On Tuesday January 21 the US Supreme Court denied the request for a temporary injunctions to close the locks in the Chicago waterway to prevent the carp from entering the lake.
In addition, the White House has predictibly sided with the state of Illinois (Obama’s home state) to not allow blocking of the canal that would require alternate shipping arrangements for the flow of barges between the lake and the Mississippi River.
Michigan and Wisconsin Governors have asked the White House for an immediate Carp summit to find a resolution to this issue. There has not yet been a response from the White House.
We will soon see where the Obama administration sides with regards to this and an even larger political issue. Obama, presumably an environmentalist, has to make a choice between siding with his Illinois political cronies or protecting one of the most valuable resources in the world. In addition, the Obama administration has to decide whether the hundred million dollar shipping industry in Illinois stack ranks against the 7 billion dollar a year sportfishing machine in the Great Lakes.
The choice is obvious, but given recent White House statements regarding the issue and the ruling by the US Supreme Court, this will be an uphill climb.

Some cool new things we have been working on with regards to the website will hopefully give you an interesting look to what we are all about, and what we are up to. We now have a “media” page linked off our home page that features our photo album and video footage. So, please email us your pictures after your trip and we will add them to the album. We are also going to try taking alot of video this year so we can give you a look at some of the action!
In addition, we have added the new “twitter” feature to our Fishing Reports page. What this will enable us to do is to update our fishing reports in REAL TIME via text message from our cell phones on the boat. They can only be short posts, so don’t expect an in depth report…but if you are wondering how we are doing before you show up for your charter, either visit our reports page or follow us via twitter on your cell phone. If you visit www.twitter.com there are simple instructions to activate your phone to enable you to receive text message updates of our real time fishing reports.
If you decide to “follow us” via twitter on your cell phone via text message OR via the website, we will be periodically throwing out some discount coupons for charters, as well as notifying of last minute availability. This is a great way to get a last minute deal on a charter…and to find out when the fishing is on fire so you can get a reservation asap. So “FOLLOW US” on Twitter to stay in the loop!
2009 will have proved to been a very exciting year for Profishient Charters! It was by far our best year in terms of total charters booked despite the poor ecomony. A huge percentage of our business was from repeat customers like you and your fantastic referrals! We owe our success to you our customers!
2009 was also another year of absolutely fantastic fishing. It started off great guns down in Michigan City with full coolers of 3-5lb coho and some huge spring kings up to 15lbs. Once we moved north to Holland it was nearly non-stop action through the end of our season. May was on fire as it usually is…and the action carried over thru the third week of June. A typical slowdown until just after the 4th of July and then it all broke loose. Limit or near limit catches were the norm rather than the exception during July, August and September, and some huge kings of 20-30lb class hit the deck…some of the nicest fish we have seen in years.
We are already looking forward to this season with high expectations for both the fishing and exciting tournament action.
Thank you again to our customers…..and remember to book early rather than late as we are already filling up dates for 2010. If 2009 was any indication…dates are going to be in high demand for 2010 and we strongly recommend you book your charter as early in advance as possible as we cannot guarantee prime morning slots throughout the summer months.
